(CIRCULAR.)

WAR DEPARTMENT,

ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE,
Washington, March 1, 1867.

Officers are requested to communicate, through Regimental Headquarters, a statement of the part taken by their companies and regiments in the engagements of the recent rebellion, giving casualties, loss inflicted, or effect produced on the enemy, prisoners and materiel captured or lost, and acts of personal gallantry of officers and men. This information is desired to enable the department to determine definitively the names of the battles which should be placed at the head of the list of officers of each regiment, as neither the reports of battles nor regimental or company returns, prepared during active operations, furnish data sufficiently complete.

BY ORDER OF THE SECRETARY OF WAR:

E. D. TOWNSEND, Assistant Adjutant General.
