PREFACE.

EACH of the following Essays (except the first) was written for the purpose of inciting various social gatherings of Friends to discussion. The plan of reading an Essay, and afterwards discussing it, has proved in the Author's experience, during many years, to be a most attractive mode of passing an evening. In the hope of encouraging so useful a practice these Essays are printed, chiefly for circulation among the Author's Friends and Acquaintance; and also as a sort of leave-taking on the part of a man who has entered on his seventy-ninth year.
