Economic Efficiency In Bookselling

An English publisher of note denies that too many books are published-he says that not enough books are bought.

The reason for that may be that not enough books are sold. People don't die of mental starvation if they are not supplied with books-not in any painful way, at least. But they will buy books "if properly approached."

The effective approach in Chicago-where more than a million potential book buyers abide is through The Wednesday Book Pages of The Chicago Daily News. The Chicago book reading and buying public is accustomed to look to these pages for book news and reviews-and bookbuying information.

Many publishers capitalize this habit*-more of them will do so as they realize how it pays.
