MUSÉE DE PEINTURE ET DE SCULPTURE, OU RECUEIL DES PRINCIPAUX TABLEAUX, STATUES ET BAS-RELIEFS DES COLLECTIONS PUBLIQUES ET PARTICULIÈRES DE L'EUROPE, DESSINE ET GRAVÉ A L'EAU FORTE PAR RÉVEIL, AVEC DES NOTICES DESCRIPTIVES, CRITIQUES ET HISTORIQUES, PAR DUCHESNE AINÉ. VOLUME XIV. PARIS. AUDOT, ÉDITEUR, RUE DU PAON, No. 8, ÉCOLE DE MÉDECINE. ÉCOLE ESPAGNOLE. ................. MURILLO. *600 GAL. Larg., 4 pieds? haut., 3 pieds? THE INFANT JESUS AND SAINT JOHN. Murillo who was fond of painting children, naturally gave the preference to subjects in which he could place them. He has here represented a scene entirely mystical, in which, the young Saint John kneeling, drinks of the water of life which the infant Jesus offers him in a shell. Several angels placed in the heavens, are witnesses of the scene. Nothing can be more charming than this elegant composition, the colouring of this valuable picture is extremely brilliant, the effect is also equally pleasing as to the obscure light, added to its perfect state of preservation. This forms one of the most engaging pictures of the Madrid museum, and has been engraved on stone by V. Camaron. Breadth, 4 feet 3 inches; heigth, 3 feet 4 inches. |
